THE SHOW GOES ON
WRITTEN BY
NEIL SEDAKA
I stand on stage and watch the faces
And there's your empty seat just staring at me.
I try to memorize the lines I've written
But Ikeep thinking back to you.
Each song is like a lonely highway
That takes me far away to precious memories.
We tried to live a life of happy moments,
Now I'm afraid I'm losing you.
And when I go out on the stage
It's just a masquerade, to hide behind the feeling.
I make sure I please the crowd
And cover up the tears that fill my heart with sadness.
I'll keep a smile upon my face until the audience has gone
And now, I must stay strong, the show goes on.
I'll sing my songs again tomorrow,
I'll look and stare at all the nameless faces,
I'll hide behind the smile, there'll be no traces
Of all the sorrow that I feel.
And even though they cheered my singing
They'll never know how much my heart is breaking.
I'll keep a smile with every bow I'm taking,
They'll never see the tears inside.
And when I go out on the stage
It's just a masquerade, to hide behind the gladness.
I make sure I please the crowd
And cover up the tears that fill my heart with sadness.
I'll keep a smile upon my face until the audience has gone
And now, I must stay strong, the show goes on.
The show is done, I leave the theatre
And I walk slowly back to my hotel room,
And there's a neon sign outside my window
I swear, it's lighting up your name.
Turn off the lights to go to bed now,
Begin to toss and turn, my head is reeling,
And there's your lovely face upon the ceiling,
I'm just about to lose my mind.
And when I step out on the stage
It's just a masquerade, to hide behind the feeling.
I make sure I please the crowd
And cover up the tears that fill my heart with sadness.
I'll keep a smile upon my face until the audience has gone
And now, I must stay strong,
The show goes on.
